Get Ready for the New SAT!

The class of 2006, approximately three million juniors across the country, will be taking the new SAT's this year. The test is longer and more difficult than before. The new changes include the writing of an essay and the addition or more advanced algebra problems. The three parts include writing, math, and critical reading (currently called verbal). The test will be 45 minutes longer and will have a maximum score of 2400.

The first test will be administered March 12, 2005. If students want to wait and see how the first group performs, the next tests can be taken in May and in June. For students planning to apply to a college early, the March test must be taken. To adequately prepare, a student should spend extra time studying for the exam. A number of tutoring facilities, school districts, and test preparation schools are offering special courses and individual tutoring time. These can be quite expensive ranging from $300 to more than $ 1200. The school districts usually offer less expensive courses, but these are not as extensive as the private tutoring and test preparation schools. Scheduling is another issue as well. Classes are offered on Sundays, for some facilities, and at night with others. Not all courses are the same. Some offer extra individual time at no extra cost and others offer a guaranteed 200 point increase. The key is find the course or tutor that meets the needs of the student. If finances and or scheduling conflicts make taking a course out of reach, then consider enrolling in an on-line SAT course or purchasing SAT study guide books. Guide books begin around $ 20.00 and may be available at the local library for free.

Remember, a student can re-take the SAT many times. Only the highest score will be submitted to the colleges.
